Carl R Johnson, Sr., 76, of Jesup, passed away Monday, July 27, 2026, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, 12:00 noon, at Bay Harbour Church of God in Brunswick, with Jimmy Ellis, Jr., Wesley Smith, Hank Newton, Baker Johnson, Peyton Williams, Travis Cristobal, Kyle Johnson, and Alan Johnson serving as Active Pallbearers. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00am until service time.
Carl was born August 1, 1949 in Brunswick, GA to Carl and Lucile Mosely Johnson. He had lived all of his life in Brunswick, moving to Jesup in March of this year. Carl was a Deacon at Norwich Baptist Church and later a Councilman at Sterling Church of God where he is currently a member. Carl had been a General Contractor and a private contractor for Brunswick Pulp and Paper. In 1972 he began his FireFighting Career working at Glynn County Fire Department , retiring as Fire Chief December 31, 2003. Carl was also the owner and operator of the former Johnson's Cemetery Services, and former District 1 Commissioner for Glynn County. He was the creator of Big Carl's BBQ Sauce which he gave to family and friends, and eventually found its way to the shelves of our local grocery stores. Carl was a member of Brunswick Optimist Club, Golden Isles BassMasters, and Duck Pond Hunting Club, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid motorsports and racing fan. But most of all, Carl's favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren.
Carl is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah T. Johnson, their children, Carl 'Tug' Johnson, Jr (Jennifer) of Jesup, and Grant 'Buck' Johnson (Rebecca) of Brunswick, their grandchildren, Chloe Johnson Kicklighter (Noah), Peyton Williams, Haylee Lynn Johnson, Baker Lane Johnson, and Abigail Reece Johnson, a great granddaughter, Carlynn Kicklighter, siblings, Robert Johnson (Robin) of Estill, SC, Cheryl A Johnson of Estill, SC, Randy E Johnson of Charleston, SC, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a sister, LaForrest J. Hunt.
Carl's family would like to give a special 'Thank You' to Hospice of South Georgia and nurses Carrie Elium and Lynn Sikes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to Bay Harbour Church of God, Sterling Church of God, or Hospice of South Georgia.
Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.
