Dorothy Tait ,101, of Glynn County died May 19,2023. Her son was by her side.

Mrs. Tait was born in Virginia and if she could have had her way, would have died in Virginia. Even though she had lived over half her 100 years in Glynn County, she was always "going to move back home."

Dorothy started visiting the Golden Isles in the 1940s when her sister married a local boy after WWII. Her parents then moved from Virginia to the coast in the 1950s. Finally, Dorothy made a "permanent" move to Brunswick in the early 1970s to help her niece and nephew with their family furniture store. The second half of her life began with her meeting and marrying her second husband, Charlie.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her luncheon ladies and traveling companions. Some of her favorite places to visit were Egypt, the Holy Land, the backroads of Ireland and Italy.

If you could sit still and listen, you could learn a lot from Dorothy. Mrs. Tait could talk for hours on many topics. Her top three were Virginia,  older family members, and the Old West. She liked westerns; both reading novels and watching her tv programs. She would empathize with the women in the Old West and how hard it had to have been for them. (Dorothy would have managed just fine.)

It was mind-blowing that in the year 2022 you could talk with a person who had actually spoken to a family member who had fought in a war that took place in the 1860s.

She had wonderful tales from her childhood. Dorothy described herself as a tomboy who didn't like to stay still (Apparently a family trait). She would run home from school to climb the apple trees in her family yard and hurl the cores at her sister and the other kids as they walked home. Even at the age of 100, she still possessed a throwing arm the Braves would envy. Ask her son or the unlucky, fat raccoons she caught stealing her cat's food!

Dorothy loved being outdoors. Gardening and taking long walks were two of her favorite past times. She always liked to have a garden planted for her fresh vegetables.

She loved nature and hated pretense. She was a very private person. She was determined, fearless,strong-willed, extremely independent individual. Mrs. Tait was a member of the Eastern Star and a faithful churchgoer having been Baptist and Methodist during her long life.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her second husband, Charlie; her parents, Elsie & Sing; her sister, Helen; Helen's children, Little Helen & Ray,Jr.; and her dear daughter, Gaye.

She is survived by her son, David C.; three grandchildren; a step-grandson; several great-grandchildren; and the marsh rat army (who until recently, was headed by Gen. Moose).

A graveside service and interment will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, June 2,2023 at Palmetto Cemetery with Reverend Jim Crandall officiating. Family and friends are invited. Memorial contributions may be made to local Salvation Army, Jolley House at Hospice of the Golden Isles, or any spay/neuter program for feral cats. If you really want to remember Mrs. Tait, take a long walk in nature or plant a garden or a tree.
