On January 26, 2026, Franklin Denzil Sellers went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at the age of 88.

Denzil was born in 1937 to a large family in Appling County, Georgia.  His father and mother were John Weaver Sellers and Lillie Belle Chasteen Sellers.  Denzil moved to Brunswick in 1944 and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1955.  He earned both his bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in music education at Georgia Southern University.

After college, Denzil taught band at Jane Macon Jr High. When Brunswick High School opened in 1967, he became the first band director there and taught both marching and symphonic band for over 35 years. Under his direction, the Brunswick High band consistently won superior ratings at Georgia high school music festivals. During this time, he also served in the National Guard and worked summers at Camp Tolochee, the local boy scout camp.

Denzil worked as the choir director for many local churches, including Glendale Baptist, Northside Baptist, and Taylor's United Methodist.

Denzil had a deep love for music. You could always tell when he was walking down the halls of Brunswick High School, because he was constantly whistling a tune and you could hear his large key ring jingling in his pocket.  He also had a love for musicals - his favorite was "The Music Man" - and loved to spend time listening to classical music.

Another of his favorite activities was golf.  Denzil was the longest-living member of the Brunswick Country Club. All he dreamed of was raising three sons that were either musically talented or could play golf under par - sadly those dreams never came true.  He did have better luck teaching them to fish.

Denzil taught thousands of students and their children during all his years as the band director at Brunswick High and everywhere he went, he was sure to run into someone he knew. He touched the lives of so many and he will be missed.

He is survived by three sons - Matthew Sellers (Kathy), Chris Sellers (Terri), Ben Sellers (Holly),  and two step daughters - Elizabeth Mayo Watts (Dennis) and Laura Mayo Simpson (Russ).  He has three grandchildren - Eli Sellers, Matthew Sellers, and Rachel Sellers.  He is survived by siblings Cecil Sellers, Janice Griffin, Jerry Sellers (Selene) as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life, followed by a reception in the parish hall, will be held Saturday, February 7th at 10:00 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 900 Gloucester St. in Brunswick. The entire service will be live streamed on the St. Marks Episcopal Church YouTube Channel for those unable to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Marks Episcopal Church, Music Fund and Choir School, Brunswick High School Band Program or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
