Obituary

Fred James Steinmann, Jr.
September 9, 1940 – November 27, 2023

Fred James Steinmann, Jr., age 83, died peacefully in his sleep, November 27 at Southeast Georgia
Health System Hospital Brunswick campus.

Born in Denver, CO, to Fred Steinmann and Florence Violet Reedholm Steinmann, "Freddie," as he was
known, graduated from Lockport District High School in 1958. His father, Fred, Sr., was an evangelical
preacher who traveled the west conducting revivals. Fred served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1963-
65. He was a sharpshooter, but he spent most of his service time playing baseball for his regiment as
the team catcher. He was also a skilled basketball player for his high school team, as well as an avid
golfer throughout his life.

He attended Lewis University in Romeoville, IL and graduated in 1970 with a B.A. in Marketing. After a
varied work career, he settled on Jekyll Island and served as Director of Purchasing for the Glynn County
Board of Education, and he was a past President of the State Purchasing Association.

In 1991, Fred married the love of his life, Rebecca Rowe Rutherford, a local bank officer. Fred and Becky
retired around 2002, and they enjoyed traveling the world. They lived on St. Simons Island, surrounded
by the greenery and trees he loved. Fred enjoyed playing golf with friends, and he was a member of
Brunswick Country Club. A friend to everyone he met, he always had time to chat with his neighbors,
and offer a helping hand. He was beloved by the children, who called him "Mr. Fred." He loved all
animals, and was always willing to adopt a stray, or care for neighborhood pets.

Fred was an active member of Community Church on St Simons Island, GA. He deeply loved its
evangelical echoes and welcoming spirit, as he spent his youth at many a revival.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, and Rebecca, his wife of 32 years. He is also predeceased by
cousins, Doris Smith of Joliet, IL, and Larry Nelson of Florence, AL. Survivors include his cousin, Paul
Nelson and wife, Elaine of Nixa, MO, brother-in-law, James Alfred Rutherford, Jr. and wife Julie of
Alpharetta, GA, sister-in-law, Virginia Ann Rutherford and husband David Amundson of Missoula, MT,
and niece Alice Rowe Amundson and husband Spencer Goldrich of White Plains, NY, and numerous
extended cousins.
