Henry Earl Mauney was the eldest of eight children, and his role as the patriarch of the Mauney family began early. As the oldest brother, he naturally became someone his siblings could depend on—a role he would carry throughout his life and extend to generations of family who loved him dearly.
Born to the late Thomas Earl Mauney and Alice Owens Mauney, Henry grew up in Everett, where he learned the importance of loyalty, hard work, and caring for those he loved.
Henry proudly served in the United States Army, reflecting his lifelong patriotism and love of freedom. He devoted 20 years to Hercules and later retired from Glynn County Public Works after 17 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Henry married his high school sweetheart, Carol Maxine Williams, and together they shared 45 years of marriage, building a beautiful family rooted in love. They welcomed their daughter, Tara Newsome and son, Henry Mauney II, affectionately known as “Bubba,”.
Bubba continued the family tradition when he married his high school sweetheart, Brandy Cravey Mauney. Their daughters, Sarah and Allison, were among Henry’s greatest joys. Sarah, with her dramatic flair, was the apple of her grandpa’s eye—his very own beauty queen. Allison shared his love of animals, the outdoors, and hunting. Growing up just across the street from their grandparents created an extraordinary family bond.
Henry and Maxine’s daughter, Tara, blessed the family with four grandchildren: Micheal Newsome II, Madison Newsome, and twins Tatum and Tristen Davis. Madison shared an especially close bond with her grandfather, living with him and remaining faithfully by his side. “Papa Henry” was also deeply loved by Rebecca Davis, who was grateful to be part of the family he held so dear.
In July, Henry experienced the joy of welcoming his first great-grandson when Micheal Newsome and Kayla honored him with a precious namesake, Henry James Newsome.
Henry’s door was always open to family, friends, and fellow hunters. As the heart of the Mauney family, he had a remarkable way of bringing everyone together. His legendary annual Fourth of July celebration became a cherished tradition filled with laughter, fellowship, and unforgettable memories.
Affectionately known as the “Mayor of Mauneyville,” Henry loved his hometown almost as fiercely as he loved his family. Everett was his happy place, and thanks in large part to the extraordinary love and care of his angel niece, Ashley Shirah Holland, he was given the priceless gift of remaining at home in the place he loved most.
To his siblings, Henry was more than the eldest brother —he was their beloved big brother. He will be dearly missed by Kim Mauney (Nanci) of Darien; Ben Mauney (Gail) of Brunswick; Thomas Mauney of Everett; Nancy Shirah (the late Bo) of Darien; and Louise Penzo (Jerald) of Darien. He was preceded in death by Bonnie Quinnelly and Charlie Mauney.
Henry leaves behind a family whose closeness reflects the love he poured into it, traditions that will endure, hunting stories that will be retold, and Fourth of July celebrations that will never feel quite the same.
Henry, Grandpa, Ol Red, Pops or Papa Henry, whatever you knew him by you know his place at the head of the family can never be filled, but the love that brought them together will forever be his greatest legacy.
Services to Celebrate Henry's life will be held Friday, November 6, 2026, 5:00PM, with Pastor Bill Brown officiating, at Chapman Funeral Chapel with Military Honors provided by the United States Army.
