Obituary

Gladys 'Iona' Johns Proctor, 88, of Brunswick, passed away Saturday evening at Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Funeral services will be held at Glyndale Baptist Church on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 11:30 with Pastor Ken Creekmore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at 3 PM in the New Hope Cemetery in Hickox, with her grandsons serving as active pallbearers and Pastor Ben Campbell officiating.

Iona was born January 16, 1936, in Brantley County, to Archie Alvin Johns and Ethel Hickox Johns. She received her education at Hickox Elementary and Nahunta High School followed by a BS in Science Education from Georgia State College for Women and MEd from Georgia Southern. She taught science in Brantley, Jacksonville Beach, Savannah and Camden County for 35 years. Iona was an active member of Glyndale Baptist Church, teaching an adult Sunday School Class and serving in several other ministries.

Iona is survived by sons, Royce Proctor, Jr., of St. Marys, and Ben Proctor (Diane) of Albany, a brother, AJ Johns (Carole) of Jacksonville, FL, sisters, Dot Spivey of Nahunta, Virginia Sikes of Folkston and Marie Johnson of Patterson, granddaughters, Christina Lynch, Elizabeth Kelly (Tony), Danielle Jones, Miranda Proctor, Samantha Cardenas (Hector), Iona Rooks (CJ), Madeline Proctor, grandsons, John Henry Bunton, John Royce Proctor (Jennifer), Ben E. Proctor (Jordan), Jerry Gray, Jr., Micah Proctor, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Royce Hubert Proctor Sr, her daughter, Dayla Bunton of Jesup and siblings Richard Johns, James Johns, Lula Mae Johns, Carroll Johns, Floyd Johns, Nora Faye Carlson and an infant brother.
