Obituary

Jessie Katherine Slaughter Duncan, 62, of Brunswick, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021, peacefully in the presence of her sons and husband on her father's 89th birthday, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 30, 2021, 11:00 am at First Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Winford, Rev. Jim Crandall and Rev. Mac Varnedoe officiating.  Interment will follow at Chapel Park Cemetery with Scott Greene, Harry Dillard, David Dess, Max Gibbs, David Frey, Will Duncan, Corey Duncan, and Ross Edwards serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her 6 beloved grandsons. A visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, from 5:00 until 7:00 at Chapman Funeral Chapel.
Jessie was born in Brunswick, November 18, 1958, the second of four daughters born to Quinton Lamar and Jimmie Jacentia Holland Slaughter. She lived in Brunswick all of her life and was a very proud graduate of Glynn Academy's class of 1976. Jessie received her Bachelor's Degree in nursing from Brunswick College and worked as a LPN at Brunswick Memorial Hospital, for the late Dr. Willard Snyder, Dr. Randolph Baker and Glynn Internal Medicine.  She was a charter traveling nurse with ABC Home Health and had also worked in Medical Records at Hospice of the Golden Isle.  Jessie was a life-long member of First Baptist Church where she was a charter member of the Joyful Noise Sunday School Class and was a parent lead of the Royal Ambassador Mission Group.
As Jessie's sons were growing up, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and PTA President and Teacher's Assistant at Ballard Elementary School.  Jessie had many friends in the community and was always available to give to those in need.  She was affectionately known as "Mama Jessie" to many over the years. Since her retirement from nursing, Jessie worked as a part time associate at Home Goods and was a full time granny, family field trip director and enjoyed every precious moment with her grandsons.
Jessie is survived by her husband of 43 years, Gene Duncan, Jr.; their three sons, Jacob Eugene Duncan (Rachel), James Franklin 'Jimmy' Duncan (Kimberly) and Patrick Slaughter Duncan (Amanda), all of Brunswick; her sisters, Julie Frey (Lynn) of Brunswick, Ruby Greene (Paul) of Gainesville, FL., and Mary Gibbs (Grayson) of Brunswick; her grandsons, Brayden & Dylan Duncan, Benjamin & Ryan Duncan and Lucas & Rhett Duncan;  numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Patsy & Gene Duncan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to Dawana Gibbs Nursing Scholarship at College of Coastal Georgia (www.CCGA.edu/Dawana) in memory of Jessie Duncan, or Giddeons International, P.O. Box 476, Brunswick, GA 31521.
