He attended Glynn County Schools and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1960. He also claims the Class of 1959, but he dropped out of school to obtain a job so he could buy a car. After 24 years at Brunswick Pulp and Paper he left the mill and opened Temptations Nightclub at the old Brunswick Mall. He then rounded out his working career at Sea Island in Banquet Set-Up.
Throughout his life he loved sports. He played softball up until he was in his 60's and enjoyed playing golf and going bowling. One of his favorite past times was to play cards, specifically Gin Rummy and found joy in playing the machines to see if he could win the jackpot. His favorite sports to watch were the Atlanta Braves and The University of Georgia Bulldogs football games. When it came to food, his favorite meal was breakfast at Maggie Mae's and the SSI Waffle House.
Survivors include his wife, Marsha Durham Collins, daughters, Casey Collins Pace (Craig), and Robin Collins Teston (Terry), grandchildren, Durham & Ansley Pace, Stephen Tindall, great grandson, Lee Tindall, a cousin, Ted McDonald, and his beloved poodle 'Lily'. He was preceded in death by his parents, JC & Jewell Collins, brothers, Jimmy Collins and Gene Wren, and sons, David Michael Collins and Johnny Scott Collins and a great grandson, John Christopher Collins.
The visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13 at Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 14, at 10 a.m. at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens on St. Simons Island with the Reverend Tom Jones officiating.
