Obituary

John 'Jack' Ross Mefford, 91, of Brunswick, Georgia, went to be with the LORD on January 2, 2026.

Jack was born on February 20, 1934, in Bloomfield, Nebraska. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his 27-year career, Jack served in both the Korean War and multiple tours in the Vietnam Conflict. He retired in 1973 in Brunswick, Georgia, having achieved the rank of master sergeant. After a 3-year hiatus, he decided retirement wasn't for him and embarked on his second career at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, where he retired after 20 years. Upon retiring for a 2nd time, Jack devoted his efforts to the Fleet Reserve Association and the VFW, advocating for enlisted service members.

In addition, he and his wife helped organize events that aided VA hospitals and clinics. Jack is preceded in death by his daughters Susan Mefford, JoAnn Murphey, Wanda Knight, and Sheila Boyd.

Jack is survived by his wife of 34 years Donna Steverson Mefford; his daughters Janet Tsoutsos, Geneva Thornton, Mary 'Simmie' Versteeg, Mari Brock, June Beckham, and Mary Stull; and his sons Bill Skipper, Erwin 'Sticky' Skipper, and Johnny Propes. Also surviving him are his 26 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
