Larry Donald Smith, 73, of Waverly, passed away Friday, June 23, 2023, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 6:30 pm, at Chapman Funeral Chapel with Lance Bazemore, Drew Taylor, and Pastor Jay Hanson officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 5:30 until service time at the funeral home.
Larry was born January 27, 1950, in Jacksonville, FL, to John Pershing Smith and Lena Inell Watts Smith. The family moved to Brunswick when Larry was 4 years old, and he continued to live in Brunswick until moving to Waverly Georgia where he has lived the past 30 years. He attended Waverly United Methodist Church, and was the owner and operator of LDS Concrete, Inc. Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a former member of M & M Hunting Club, and a member of the Waverly Hunting Club. Larry was a country-wide sharpshooter, gun smith, and pistol smith. He worked as a gun smith at Smitty's Gun Shop in Sterling, which he owned with his brother, in the 1970's, and went on to own his own gun shop where he built custom PPC guns for local police officers and FLETC students. In September of 1979, Larry was one of the four members of the Glynn County four-man team that won the State Shooting Championship at FLETC. In the early 1980's, Larry was a firefighter with the Glynn County Fire Department. He enjoyed stock car racing and was an avid stock car racer at the Golden Isles Speedway.
Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eloise Henson Smith of Waverly, their children, Kammie Smith Simpson (Clay Butler) of Waverly, Angela Renee Smith Stocks, (Michael) of North Carolina, and Timothy Barry Smith of Waverly, brothers, John Smith (Bonnie) of Conyers, GA, and Charles Wayne Smith of Jesup, 13 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by infant twins, Dora Inell Smith and Larry Donald Smith, Jr., son, David Andrew Smith, grandson, Dustin Lee Taylor, and brothers, Andrew Cleveland Smith and Emory Tiller Smith.
Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
