Obituary

Richard Leo Newbern, 90, of Brunswick, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 9, 2023, at Gracemore Nursing Home.
The Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Tim McKeown officiating.
Richard was born December 27, 1932, in Kirkland, Georgia, to Etheldred and Esther Neugent Newbern.  He lived in Brunswick all of his life.  He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School through the eighth grade where he met the love of his life, Mary Natalie Vieira.  He graduated in 1952 from Glynn Academy where he was voted Most Creative and played right guard for four years on the Terrors football team which was led by Coach Page.  He remembers going to Twin Oaks Restaurant with the members of the football team during lunch, always watchful for Principal Boswell. He and his wife, Natalie enjoyed attending the annual high school reunions.
Richard was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church who faithfully attended Mass with his wife and seven children. He was a Korean War Era Veteran having served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1956, of which two years were spent as a machinist in Tachikowa, Japan. He was a machinist at Brunswick Pulp and Paper for 30 years, where his co-workers were noted as saying, "If you wanted a job done right, you brought it to Dick Newbern!"  He volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Society for twelve years with his wife Natalie by his side.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 9.  He enjoyed gardening, and his yard was known as the most beautiful in the neighborhood for over five decades.  He also enjoyed history, and he was an avid reader. He and Natalie were friendly and generous to everyone they knew. Richard was a man of integrity, compassion, unconditional love, and wisdom, encouraging his children and everyone around him.  Always smiling, he knew how to comfort those in need. "Put it in the Good Lord's Hands," his loved ones heard him say often. He loved his seven children, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will dearly miss him.
Survivors include his children, Cheryl Newbern (Webb), of Davis, CA, Richard Newbern (JoAnn) of Cochran, GA, Dr. Cindy Holloway (Cayce), Scott Newbern, Lisa Newbern, and Angie Newbern (Kenny) of Brunswick, GA, and Jeff Newbern of Tokyo, Japan; 12 grandchildren, Zack, Naomi, Heather (Jackson), Matt, Cana (Jeremiah), Nathan, John, Christian, Nicholas, Michael, Daryl and Brandon, and many beautiful greatgrandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Natalie Vieira Newbern, and his three older brothers, Wallace, Joe, and John.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.
