St. Simons Island, GA
Royce Elwyn Layman, of St. Simons Island, GA, formerly of Ludlow, MA, was
called home into his Savior's arms on Sunday, October 12. He was born in
Doylestown, PA on April 11, 1935, a beloved son of the late Clyde & Emma
(Gwyn) Layman. He graduated from Central Bucks High School in
Doylestown. He graduated from Bob Jones University with a Bachelor's in
Music Education. While at Bob Jones, Royce met the woman who would be
his bride, Carole Sloat. Royce & Carole married on June 10, 1956. They then
moved to Michigan where Royce attended University of Michigan to obtained
his Master's Degree. They also began their family of four children while in
Michigan. Over time, Royce, Carole, and their young family landed in
Ludlow, MA, where they settled & raised their family. For 20 years, he held
the position of Band Director at Ludlow High School. One of his proudest
accomplishments was accompanying the High School concert band to world
competition in Vienna, Austria in 1975. Royce was awarded a Doctor of
Education from the University of Massachusetts. He worked as Assistant
Superintendent of Schools in the Adams/Cheshire Regional School District;
he finished his career at American International College in Springfield, MA.
While in Massachusetts, Royce & Carole were active members of the
Evangelical Covenant Church. Throughout their lives, they gave attention to
bringing their family up to know follow Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior, for
which their family continues to be so grateful.
After being frequent visitors to St. Simons Island, GA, Royce & Carole decided
to call the area home & moved permanently in 2010. Because it was important
to them to continue in fellowship & teaching with God's people,
they became members of Community Church in St. Simons, where they were
active for many years.
Royce loved his Savior Jesus, his family, music, golf, and reading. In addition
to his wife Carole, he leaves his children Tammy Layman-Porter & husband
Bill; Craig & wife Marlene; Scott & wife Allison; Jon & wife Sandy. Royce &
Carole have been blessed with six grandchildren, whom they love dearly;
Samantha, Brett, Christian, Emma, Jackson, and Lexington. Royce was
predeceased by his parents, and very recently by his sister June Mitchell of
Michigan.
A celebration of life for relatives and friends will be held at Marsh's Edge in
St. Simons Island on Monday, 10/20 at 4 p.m. which was where Royce &
Carole most recently made their home.
