Stanley Lawrence Crews (aka Captain Larry), 76 years of age, passed away on February 12,2024, leaving behind a rich legacy of creativity, craftsmanship, innovation, artistic expression and a deep love for his family and friends.

Larry was born in Brunswick, Georgia on October 7, 1947 to Stanley L. Crews and Lajannah Duncan. In addition, he had a loving stepfather, Vernon Lewis. He was raised on the South End of Brunswick and also Blythe Island where he naturally grew up with a passion for fishing in the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers in and around the Golden Isles. After completion of high school at Glynn Academy, rather than being drafted, Larry enlisted in the Army where he served with honor and distinction serving most of his time in Germany during the Vietnam War. After his enlistment, he carried the values instilled in him during his military service throughout his life. Coming home, he worked at Rentavision Cable Company, the first cable company in Brunswick. After that he went to work at the pulp mills in Brunswick and St. Mary's all the while also running a television
repair business at his home. With a vision and drive to succeed, Larry then founded his own cable company, Woodbine Cable TV, which quickly became a cornerstone of the community, providing reliable service to countless households. Larry's father was an avid fisherman so he naturally developed a profound love for fishing as he spent much of his childhood and teenage years on both the Turtle and Altamaha Rivers. After Larry sold the cable company, he embarked on a career that would define his life, finally pursuing his dream of becoming a charter boat captain.

For years, he and the love of his life, Judy, owned Offshore Charters, a fishing business where they docked their boats at the Jekyll Island Marina - fishing the Atlantic and coastal waters where they not only led countless fishing expeditions but also created lasting memories for all who boarded their vessels, the Sea Crews, 4-play, and the Ospo. Currently, Judy continues to operate the Jekyll Island Fishing Center, a bait, tackle and gift shop at the Jekyll Island Pier, which they own together.

Captain Larry's love for fishing was contagious, as he eagerly shared his expertise with others, whether they were seasoned anglers or beginners. His enthusiasm for the sport was matched only by his generosity, often taking friends and family on unforgettable fishing trips.

In addition, Larry was a pillar of the community, known for his integrity and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. As a longtime member of the Jaycees he worked on several large community projects throughout his tenure. Larry was a true Renaissance soul, mastering the art of woodworking, carpentry, and various forms of visual expression. With skilled hands and a vivid imagination, Larry transformed ordinary materials into extraordinary works of art, leaving behind a legacy of beauty and craftsmanship. Along with woodworking and carpentry, Larry was also a talented visual artist, exploring various mediums to bring his imagination to life. His paintings, drawings, and mixed-media creations captivated viewers with their depth, emotion, and originality, showcasing his versatility and boundless creativity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Larry was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Judy, his sons Stephen (Faye), and Kenny (Danella), of Brunswick as well as Chris Duncan, of Dublin, Virginia, along with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Dixie Crews-Brienza of Brunswick, his stepsister, Rita Omark of Atlanta, surrogate sister/cousin Debbie Campbell of Brunswick, along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. All of his family are extremely thankful and will always cherish the moments spent with him both on and off the water. In addition to his human family, Larry had a special bond with his loyal canine companion, Lady. Whether they were out on the boat or lounging at home, their bond was unbreakable, bringing joy and companionship to Captain Larry's life.

Along with his family, Captain Larry leaves behind a community of fellow fishermen and friends who will miss his camaraderie, his fishing stories, and his unwavering passion for life. In honor of his memory, a celebration of Captain Larry's life will be held at Chapman Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 16,2024 at 10:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow in Chapman's Event Center. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to No Kill Glynn County, a rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of animals.

Larry had a great love for animals and was a kind-hearted soul who touched the lives of all who knew him. He had a knack for bringing people together with his warmth, humor, and infectious spirit. Though the captain has set sail on his final earthly voyage, his legacy of service, entrepreneurship, love and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
