Wilma W. Knight of St. Simons Island, died on April 23, 2023.

Mrs. Knight was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Pineville, Kentucky, to Virgil and Anna Mae Hoskins. After Mr. Hoskins died, Mrs. Hoskins married Thomas Claude Wilfong Jr. of Hickory, North Carolina, who later adopted Wilma.

Wilma is predeceased by her husband, Kenneth E. Knight, to whom she was married for 72 years. She is survived by three children, Katherine Knight Clark (Harry) of Greenwich, Connecticut, Jeffrey Thomas Knight (Terri) of Duluth, and Michael Andrew Knight (Ginny) of Auburn, Alabama; five grandchildren, Abigail Wells Clark (Chris Hwang) of Oakland, California, Taylor Chapman Clark (John Woody) of Burlingame, California, Caitlin Knight Clark of San Francisco, Kevin Michael Knight (Ashley) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Amy Nicole Knight of Tulsa; three step-grandchildren, Bradford Duncan Roy (Stephanie) of Birmingham, Alabama, Kimberly Ann Harris (John) of Statesboro, and Kelly Elizabeth Milot (Dan) of Marietta; five great-grandchildren, Jack Gabriel Knight and Piper Kelly Knight, both of Tulsa, Avery Kelle Knight, of Tulsa, Sam Everett Woody, Margaret Clark Woody and Anna Grace Woody, all of Burlingame, and Julia Skye Clark Hwang of Oakland; and one step-great-grandchild, Nolan Roy Harris of Statesboro.

She attended elementary school in Pineville, and then Greensboro, North Carolina, and high school in Hickory. She lettered in high school in Glee Club and basketball. She was also a member of the Tri-Hi-Y Society, the Lettermen's Club, the Monogram Club, the Latin Club and the Drama Club. She was also a student representative.

She graduated from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1948, where she belonged to the Cornelian Society (Dance Chairman), the Lutheran Student Association (Treasurer) and Gamma Alpha. She was also on the Dean's List and was Maid-of-Honor in the May Court.

All three of the Knight children were born in Maryville, Tennessee. There, Wilma was active in her church and golf at Green Meadow Country Club. The Knights and four other families founded St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maryville. Mrs. Knight was head of the Lutheran Women's Association, church treasurer and started the children's choir. She was President of the Junior Woman's Club. Her other civic activities included the Jaycettes, the Junior Service League, the Well-Baby Clinic, and the Clothes Closet.

The Knights moved to Augusta in 1961 and joined Covenant Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Knight taught Sunday School, was Director of Vacation Bible School, a Circle Leader, started a children's choir and served on the Building Committee and the Pastor Nominating Committee.

She was President of the PTA of Forest Hills Elementary School and chaired the Mother's March for the March of Dimes. She was Treasurer of the Cancer Society and served as Chairman of the Schools and Colleges Committee. She was a Pink Lady at St. Joseph's Hospital and served on the YWCA Board. She was a member of the Augusta Symphony Guild and served as publicity chair for the Augusta Cotillion.

Mrs. Knight and her husband started a swim team at the Augusta Country Club and took several of the swimmers to the Junior Olympics. She also held a real estate license with Sherman and Hemstreet of Augusta.

Mr. and Mrs. Knight moved to St. Simons Island in 1977 and joined St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Wilma served on the Board of Deer Run Condominiums. She was also Secretary of the Presbyterian Women, Circle Leader, Secretary of the Diaconate, the first female Clerk of the Session, Vice-Moderator of Presbyterian Women, Chairman of the "Kirkin' of the Tartan" program, Chairman of the "Family Promise" program for the homeless, Chairman of the Good Friday Lenten Luncheon, Co-Chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee and Honorary Chairman of the Brunswick March of Dimes. Mrs. Knight also served on the Preschool Board of the church and the nominating committees for the Presbyterian Women and Officers of the church. She participated in the Manna House, Habitat for Humanity, and the PAL programs of the church. She was awarded the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership in 1997.

Mrs. Knight was an avid, trophy-winning tennis player and golfer - with a hole-in-one! She served as Treasurer and Scrapbook Chair of the Ladies Golf Association at The Hampton Club.

Mrs. Knight had three very active children and participated in and supported them in all of their activities. She was the Number One carpool and swim team mother. She also enjoyed many types of needlework - making cross-stitched samplers, light-up Christmas vests and sweaters as well as Chrismons for family, the church Christmas tree, and friends. Two of her samplers are on display at the church.
